In recent times, both nationwide and specifically in Hanoi, there have been several notable fire incidents, with a particularly serious one occurring on the night of September 12th at house number 37, Alley 29/70, Khuong Ha Street, Khuong Dinh Ward, Thanh Xuan District. These incidents have resulted in casualties and property damage. The reality shows that most fire-related deaths are due to asphyxiation from toxic fumes before succumbing to the flames. Therefore, when a fire occurs, it is crucial to remain calm and follow the instructions provided by the Fire Department (PCCC) to handle the situation.

Buying firefighting equipment is considered a solution that allows people to handle fire incidents when they occur. However, using such equipment correctly and ensuring its effectiveness in helping people escape danger and extinguishing fires is not something everyone knows how to do. We will introduce our viewers to various methods of using fire prevention and firefighting equipment, as well as the proper ways to escape in case of emergencies, following the guidance provided by the Fire Department.

USING A SAFETY DESCENT ROPE

In the event of a fire, the victim should quickly put on the rope. Wear it as close to the armpits as possible to ensure it does not cause discomfort when descending. Tighten the buckle as close to the body as possible and move towards the balcony. During the descent, use both hands to pull the loose end of the descent rope. Then, gradually release your body weight to let the rope descend on its own. While descending, try to avoid contact with walls, fences, balconies, or any other obstacles. If contact with a wall, fence, balcony, or any structure is inevitable, bend your knees slightly to push yourself away from the obstacle to prevent injury. After reaching the ground, quickly lock the rope and pull up the remaining portion so the next victim can descend following the reverse cycle.

USING A SAFETY LADDER

In the event of a fire, the victim should quickly climb out onto the balcony. If the balcony is at a significant height, you can slowly move a chair out onto the balcony. The victim should firmly grip the fixed railings and accurately place their feet on the ladder rungs. Ensure that during the process of descending, your body is close to the ladder, and your chest is pressed against it. Descend following the principle of one foot, one hand, to ensure that the ladder's balance is not disrupted and that you can safely slide down to the ground. Note that during the descent, the victim can place a foot on the railing and may accidentally slip, leading to a fall from height. These are basic skills related to using a safety ladder in the event of a fire or explosion.

USING A GAS MASK

When a fire occurs in a smoky environment, the victim should quickly take the smoke filter mask from its box, install the filter onto the mask. After installation, swiftly place the mask over the nose and mouth, with the head harness securing it on the head. Pull the strap from behind and fasten it with the buckle. At this point, the mask is ready for use, allowing you to move safely in a smoke-filled environment.

USING A FIRE EXTINGUISHER

Immediately after a fire breaks out, those involved in firefighting should quickly grab a fire extinguisher. For gas extinguishers, quickly pull the pin, adjust the nozzle, and advance towards the fire. At a distance of about 1.5 meters, squeeze the handle firmly and decisively until the fire is extinguished.

USING A POWDER FIRE EXTINGUISHER

For a powder fire extinguisher, individuals involved in firefighting should quickly retrieve the fire extinguisher. While moving towards the fire, shake it. When you are approximately 3-5 meters away from the fire, sit down, place the extinguisher on the ground, and proceed to remove the safety pin. Lift the extinguisher, hold the nozzle with one hand, and advance towards the fire to a distance of about 3-3.5 meters. Then stop, squeeze the handle firmly, and keep the nozzle aimed directly at the fire. When the fire is extinguished, stop using the extinguisher.
